I have followed quite a few TV series over the years. Be it some comedy as a kid, or sitcoms as a teenager, I have enjoyed them a lot. But when it came to drama, the first thing that would pop up in my head would be the family dramas my mother follows devotedly. I have heard of a few recent shows which are pretty good with respect to the drama content. These include "Dexter", "Mad Men" among several others.
But recently, I started watching the hit HBO series "The Sopranos", and now, it is the first thing that I think of when someone mentions drama. TV is usually a place for the larger than life, characters with extraordinary talents, and abilities, and an amazing moral compass are common here. The amazing moral compass part has been an integral part of shows I have followed. Everywhere, there is a right and a wrong, a black and a white. I always end up rooting for someone and taken the moral aspect for granted. The Sopranos has changed all this. It has introduced me to a new level of human psychology, to how our personalities play a big role in our decisions, and how our past shapes our personality.
Can you root for a fat guy who cheats on his wife, drinks a lot, and has no qualms about putting a bullet through you if you cross him? No, you can just watch now he balances his mafia family and his own family. Just watch and admire . It is a drama where the main character is scarily human. Tony Soprano may be a mob boss, but he still given plenty of sleepless nights by his job, and his family. The show has characters whom you will have encountered at some point in your life. And none of them are artificial. The emotional and psychological depth to which the characters are portrayed is amazing. For me, watching the show and its characters has definitely stirred up some emotion, some connections with people in my life.
Considering the fact that this show started in 2000, when apparently, such drama was non-existent on US and Indian television, it is indeed a visionary TV series, and something I have enjoyed immensely till now. But I am yet to watch the final season and also the controversial finale, so I guess I should wait before I pass judgement on the entire series.............
P.S : I have heard that "The Wire" is also an excellent series, will start watching that one soon.

Return to the Blog : Food for thought
Last time I posted something was when Anish was publicizing his newly created blog. This post is after Yash has started blogging. This time, I have decided that I must come up with a theme for my blog posts, because I am frankly too lazy to post general happenings in my life (and there are a very few general happenings worth posting about) . I have, had a lot of good cultural inputs thanks to movies, books, people and even sport. So I will henceforth blog about things related to the above, that impact me creatively and stimulate my thoughts.
